Last week, Subsquid’s Anand Houston and Massimo Luraschi sat down with Orcus Finance’s Vlad and Stas for a hands-on Subsquid coding session to show just how easy it is to set up a Subsquid process from scratch. Using a real-world example from historical Orcus data, Massimo demonstrated how to index EVM logs on Astar in order to power an investment deposit chart for the Orcus Dapp, a process that took less than half an hour!

The conversation began with Vlad and Stas revealing that Subsquid had been recommended by the Astar team, who advised them that using Subsquid would be a “much easier and much faster solution” to their data requirements. Vlad revealed that employing Subsquid saved the Orcus team around two weeks in development time, telling Anand and Massimo that it took him just one day to go through the documentation and then build the base model.

Orcus shared some exciting product developments, including an auto-compounding yield-aggregation product and a staking system for the Orcus launchpad. The Orcus team also shared their reasons for developing on the Polkadot and Astar network in particular, praising the products and developer tools available to them.

Ahead of the coding demonstration, Massimo ran through the benefits of Subsquid for projects like Orcus, including the offloading of heavy lifting of data indexing to archives and the availability of historical data for easier querying in batches, which is also faster than RPC calls.

The core of the discussion was of course the live demonstration of how easy and fast it is to build a real world example of a Subsquid schema, with Massimo showing how to use Subsquid to track investment deposits on the Orcus platform.

The process, which covered everything from initial setup through to launch, is a great opportunity for anyone developing or thinking of developing a Squid to see the simplicity of running a schema on Subsquid, as well as to hear some expert tips and tricks from the team!
